Can someone explain the vitamin C and retinol timing thing once and for all?

I have read that you must never use vitamin C and retinol together, and I have also read that is a myth and you can layer them fine. Both from sources that sounded confident. I currently do vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night and my skin is happy, so maybe I should not fix what is not broken, but I am curious what the actual reasoning is. Is the old warning about pH, or about irritation, or is it genuinely outdated? And for those who do use both at night, how does your skin handle it? I am not trying to complicate my routine, I just hate following a rule when nobody can tell me why it exists. Would love the nuance from people who understand the chemistry better than I do.
